VOLUNTEER STORIES
Volunteer Jorge Murillo is a child of Mexican immigrants, born and raised in Gilroy, CA. He moved to this area in 2019 for a fellowship in memory research at NIH. While at NIH, he decided he wanted to be a physician and especially one that cares and treats patients in communities like the one where he grew up. Jorge grew up visiting community health centers for his own medical care and understands how vulnerable populations have difficulty accessing health care. Places like Kaseman Health Clinic serve as a bridge between the vulnerable and quality health care. He has been proud to volunteer as a Spanish-English interpreter, serving as the linguistic and cultural bridge between clinician and patient.
Jorge's goal in volunteering at Kaseman Clinic was to make communication between patient and clinician more fluid and to observe how clinicians care for and treat diverse patients. Jorge recently expressed that he got much more out of volunteering as an interpreter than he had expected. He also learned how a clinic functions from observing administration work on daily tasks and assisting with paperwork, calling patients, and helping to set up the initial COVID-19 mobile testing site the Clinic offered. This additional experience served as good insight as his long term goals include the possibility of his own private medical practice or community clinic.
Thank you, Jorge, for volunteering with Reach's Kaseman Health Clinic!
