Inspired by students' motivation to master the fundamentals of reading and writing in English, LOP launched an English literacy class this year that focuses on reading comprehension, writing, phonics, and pronunciation. The class is specifically designed to prepare students for the beginner ESL classes. So far, fifteen students have participated in the class, working closely with teachers to address their specific needs and to advance them to the next step in their education journey.

One student, Elizabeth, is a great example of how students and teachers collaborate. Eager to learn English to help her better perform her job as a cleaner, Elizabeth diligently worked with her teacher to learn work-related vocabulary (e.g., the names of pieces of furniture and parts of a bathroom) and to master English phonetics and reading comprehension. She can now read basic English sentences and use her knowledge of phonics to help sound out more complicated words. Having graduated from the literacy class, she is currently enrolled in LOP's beginner ESL class for the spring semester.
