provide direct financial assistance to those who need it most

MKHC Patient Relief Fund

Throughout the year, MKHC staff regularly encounter uninsured or low-income patients who need critical medical care, including health screenings, diagnostic tests, and the like, but do not have funds to pay for them. The primary purpose of this relief fund is to provide direct monetary assistance to those patients to access the care they need when no other subsidy or funding is available. By establishing this relief fund, MKHC donors will quite literally help save lives.

Joan's Story

After recovering from an unexpected health issue that left her bedridden for a year, Joan* came to MKHC for an initial check-up. Our clinical staff helped connect Joan to a variety of support services, including occupational therapy for ongoing pain and mobility concerns, routine screenings for cervical and colorectal cancer, and medication to manage arthritis.

At a follow-up appointment, Joan mentioned ongoing abdominal discomfort and shortness of breath. Thankfully, she was able to see a GI specialist at MKHC, who recommended chest and abdominal X-rays to get more information. Joan wanted to get the scans to get to the bottom of her issues, but without employment, the cost was too high for her to reasonably afford them.

However, through the MKHC Patient Relief Fund, Joan was able to cover the costs of both X-rays. She later expressed that “[the X-rays helped] me because of my condition. I need[ed] the doctor to see those x-rays to improve my treatment.”

Dora's Story

For over a year, Dora* has lived with pain and weakness in her hands and forearms. At first, the pain was worst at night — her hands felt like they were “falling asleep,” and morning stiffness made even simple tasks impossible. She could not open a bottle or cut food without pain.

Despite being told she had arthritis and trying medication, her symptoms persisted. Dora experienced tingling, burning sensations, and weakness that made lifting her daughter or carrying laundry a struggle. Long hours working as a cleaner only made things worse, as sweeping and other tasks became painful and exhausting.

Her doctor suspected ulnar neuropathy, a condition affecting the nerves in her arms, and recommended an EMG/NCV scan to measure how well her nerves and muscles were working. But for months, Dora delayed receiving it because of cost concerns. Through the MKHC Patient Relief Fund, however, Dora will finally be able to get the scans and the answers she needs to move forward with treatment and regain her strength.

Dora shared her gratitude: “I thank the clinic for helping me with the exam; it helps me a lot so that I can cover expenses for my mother, who is going through a very difficult situation.”
