Staff Spotlight: Enrique Viscarra, Senior Accountant
Enrique is a key member of our senior leadership team, contributing behind-the-scenes to ensure Reach's work remains sustainable. He agreed to answer a few questions for us.
How did you get involved with Reach?
I started as a volunteer out of college. I wanted to find some work practice in accounting, and a friend told me about Reach. At the beginning, I was volunteering almost full time, and after a few months they were able to offer me a paid position. I’ve now been here almost 10 years.
What is your favorite thing about working here?
The sense of giving back to the community. I’ve always cared about giving back—for a while I was donating blood every 3–4 months and organizing blood drives—and that’s why my friend thought Reach would be a good fit for me. I always feel satisfied at the end of the day.
How do you think your work ties into the overall mission of Reach?
Even though I’m not working directly with programs or clients, I give the programs the tools they need to help clients. My work ensures that we have our ducks in a row so our programs can run.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your job?
People in the accounting world know how much work it takes, but others sometimes don’t realize it. It’s more than just bookkeeping—it’s forecasting, analyzing, and reporting.
What is your go-to productivity trick or habit?
Spreadsheets! My best friends are spreadsheets. They help keep things organized and allow me to see everything in one place.
Also, using historical data. I like finding ways to solve problems, and data is key. Looking at past situations and performance helps us as we move forward.
How do you like to unwind after a busy day at work?
At the end of the week, I do something outdoorsy—hiking, biking, paddling, camping. A few hours helps me get away from everything.
What is a fun or unique fact about yourself that most people don't know?
I wanted to be a dance major. I have 30 years of experience—modern dance, ballroom, folk dancing. I did competitions and danced internationally. But accounting felt like a safer choice, so that’s what I ended up doing.
