REAP In Action: The Difference a Friendly Ear Can Make

In fall of 2024, Ms. C came to REAP for financial assistance but gained the encouragement and resources to achieve her goals.

Behind on her rent and facing the possibility of eviction court, Ms. C came to REAP looking for help to cover the overdue payments. Available funding prevented the immediate housing crisis, but REAP's support didn't stop there. Working with Odeth, the REAP director, Ms. C was able to re-apply for SNAP benefits for her three children. Together, she and Odeth also contacted the Social Security Department regarding an issue with disability benefits for Ms. C's son.

During their conversation, Ms. C and Odeth discussed Ms. C’s background and goals. Odeth learned that Ms. C's goal was to finish a nursing program and get a job as a nurse, so she’d no longer need to rely on housing vouchers and other assistance. Mrs. C had begun a nursing program at Montgomery College but completed only 6 months before pausing her studies for the birth of her son with special needs. Hearing this, Odeth shared information she had recently received from MC about opportunities for low-income students and encouraged Mrs. C to reach out and explore her options for completing the nursing program. That simple act of listening and sharing helpful information sparked a turning point.

In May of this year, Ms. C reached out with exciting news: she had graduated from Montgomery College with a practical nursing certificate and was preparing to take her licensing exam to become an LPN. She told Odeth that their conversation had inspired her to refocus on her goal, and that having someone who truly listened made all the difference.

Mrs. C is proud to be the first person in her family to graduate from college with a professional diploma. Hers is a powerful example of how REAP's support goes beyond financial assistance to offer personalized support, resources, and encouragement.
