Board Member Spotlight: Lourdes Parry, Healthcare Advocate, ESL Teacher, and More
This year, MKHC’s Board of Directors welcomed a new member: Lourdes Parry, an ESL teacher, healthcare advocate, and longtime Montgomery County resident with a passion for serving the community.
Her journey with Reach began through her work in the Healthcare Coalition of Montgomery County, where she collaborated with Reach and other organizations to improve healthcare access for underserved populations. Over the years, she witnessed firsthand the impact of Reach’s work. When she later joined our Language Outreach Program as a teacher, she was inspired by the energy and commitment of the volunteers and students.
"I was amazed to find so many motivated people to help, get involved, and empower community members to achieve their full potential in our society," she says. "I understood that we share a culture of dedication and respect for those in need."
Originally from Peru, Lourdes was an OB/GYN, surgeon, researcher, and community practitioner before moving to the U.S. in 2000 to pursue a Master’s in Public Health at Johns Hopkins. She’s called Montgomery County home ever since, raising two children who now work in healthcare themselves.
With her background in medicine and public health, she brings a wealth of experience to the board. Her goal is to help expand MKHC's resources and community engagement, especially in the area of healthcare. "Being a Latina immigrant myself gives a unique perspective to the Board of Directors. I knew Reach was a good fit to give back and make a difference."
She believes Reach plays a vital role in the community by offering essential services—from healthcare and housing to ESL classes, citizenship support, and elder care. “The impact Reach has is extremely meaningful,” she shares. “These services are key to helping people live healthier, more stable lives.”
When she’s not teaching or advocating for health equity, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, gardening, cooking, dancing, biking, traveling, and exploring new cultures. A fun fact? She’s endlessly curious and strives to learn something new every single day.
