Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Barbara Karp, Neurologist

After retiring from a career in neurology, Dr. Barbara Karp realized there was one thing she wasn't ready to leave behind: caring for patients. While looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, she learned that MKHC was searching for a neurologist. It felt like the perfect fit, allowing her to continue doing the work he loves while giving back to the community.

Today, Barbara volunteers by seeing patients with neurologic concerns and helping provide specialized care to people who might not otherwise have access to a neurologist. For her, the experience is rewarding on many levels. Not only does she enjoy caring for patients, but she also loves having the opportunity to work alongside medical students and sharing knowledge while continuing to learn herself. As an added bonus, volunteering gives her a chance to practice her Spanish to connect with patients in the community.

One of the things that has had the greatest impact on her is witnessing the help needed in the community stating, “What stands out in my mind is the deep need in the community for the services the clinic provides and the amazing compassionate staff and volunteers trying to address those needs.” She is continuously inspired by their compassion and commitment to helping others.

When asked about the impact MKHC has on the community, her answer is simple: “healthier individual lives and healthier communities”. By providing access to quality healthcare, the clinic helps improve lives while strengthening the community as a whole.

Volunteering has also enriched her own life. It gives her personal satisfaction, keeps her actively engaged in medicine, challenges her to stay current with evolving practices, and introduces her to people and experiences she might not otherwise encounter. Through his service, Barbara continues to make a meaningful difference, bringing expert care, compassion, and dedication to every patient she meets.
