Meet Our Problem Solvers: Laura Starr Ramos

When Reach faces a challenge that requires creativity, compassion, and organization, Laura Starr Ramos is often one of the first people ready to help.

A lifelong volunteer, Laura has used her organizational talents to support clients in our Senior Reach program and residents at Jefferson and Rockland Houses, transforming not only spaces but also the lives of the people who live there.

We know we can ask for her help whenever we have a project that involves stepping into situations that feel overwhelming and helping create order and peace of mind. "I find a lot of satisfaction in creating systems that make life easier for others,” as she puts it. “What I love most about organizing is that it often gives people much more than a clean space. It gives them peace of mind, reduces stress, and allows them to focus on what matters most.”

Over the years, that talent has been a gift both to clients in our Senior Reach program and residents at Jefferson and Rockland Houses. Recently, Laura helped an elderly Jefferson House resident, Mr. H, who is a talented oil painter, declutter and organize his room. Together, they found ways to properly display artwork that had previously been stacked against walls and sitting on the floor. Seeing his paintings hung and appreciated brought him a renewed sense of pride and joy.

What started as one project soon expanded. Laura worked with other residents and staff to refresh common areas throughout the house, sourcing donated items through local Buy Nothing groups and helping create a warmer, more welcoming environment.

Similarly, she recalls how impactful it was to work with a 90-year-old Senior Reach client who had to move from her home of thirty years. The client kept putting off meeting, as the prospect of downsizing and leaving was overwhelming. Eventually she agreed to meet, and over a few months she and Laura went through each room together. Once they’d finished packing and preparing, Laura stayed in touch, visiting the client at her new apartment, helping transform her pantry into a library, and even donating some of her own father’s art collection to spruce up the new place. "What began as a volunteer assignment became a true friendship," Laura recalls. She continued visiting the client for several years afterward.

Laura has volunteered in many capacities, including nonprofit leadership roles as Secretary, Vice President, and President. Once she gets involved with a non-profit, she dives in headfirst. “Once I learn about an organization's mission and how it operates, my wheels immediately start spinning about how I can help.”

Whether she's organizing a room, connecting resources, or helping someone navigate a major life transition, Laura is motivated by building relationships and supporting people without judgment.

"Everyone has a story, and I enjoy listening, learning, and finding ways to support them," she says.

We are grateful for the countless ways Laura has supported Reach and the individuals we serve. Her example shows that some of the most meaningful volunteer work isn't just about what gets organized or accomplished. It's about helping people feel seen, valued, supported, and at home.
