MKHC

A Historic Investment in MKHC's Future

We’re honored to announce that MKHC has received the largest individual gift in its history—a $100,000 investment in our future. This generous contribution comes from supporters who first experienced our work up close through our outsourced finance team. This funding optimizes MKHC's working capital and allows the organization to establish an endowment, creating long-term stability and helping ensure that our work supporting underserved patients can continue for years to come.

Thank you to Maria Thomas and Chris Otley for their extraordinary generosity. Read our interview to learn what inspired their gift and why they believe in MKHC's mission.

Tell us about yourselves.

We were both born, raised, and educated in the DC area, growing up in families where our parents worked in government, which instilled in us a strong appreciation for hard work and modest living. Although we met later in life, we have blended our families together and now share a full and rewarding life with four children and two grandchildren. Chris recently retired after a 42-year career in the health insurance industry, where he held senior leadership roles. Maria retired earlier this year after a successful career as a Controller and financial consultant serving multiple clients.

Is there any issue or cause you feel most passionate about?

Chris spent his entire career within the healthcare delivery system, including the last 20 years working with insurance programs serving Medicaid populations. Through this work, he witnessed firsthand the challenges many individuals face in accessing timely and necessary care, and the significant impact when those needs go unmet. Maria dedicated much of her career to nonprofit organizations focused on supporting underserved communities. Together, we feel incredibly fortunate and are deeply passionate about giving back to help others.

What changes do you think would make our community a better place?

This is a complex question, as experiences can vary widely across communities within Montgomery County. Key issues include housing affordability, access to healthy food, quality and affordable healthcare, education, and safe environments. These challenges are all tied to broader social determinants of health and well-being, and meaningful improvements in these areas would greatly enhance the overall prosperity of many communities.

What impact do you think Reach and MKHC have on our community?

We see Reach and MKHC as vital resources and a refuge for those in need. They provide direct support by connecting individuals with both private and public resources. Without organizations like these, many people would have limited options for accessing the help they need.

What encouraged you to get involved with Reach and MKHC?

Given our professional backgrounds, we are both very mindful of financial stewardship and organizational efficiency. Maria’s experience with Reach and MKHC demonstrated that the organization operates with strong fiscal responsibility and effectiveness. This gave us confidence and motivated us to support and advocate for their work.

What inspired you to make a significant donation to MKHC, and what impact do you hope it will have?

We have been very fortunate in our lives and wanted to give back to an organization that is making a meaningful difference and aligns with our values. It was important to us to contribute where we knew funds would be used effectively. We hope our donation not only supports the mission of MKHC but also encourages others to contribute and help sustain its important work.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

We are grateful for the opportunity to support organizations like Reach and MKHC and hope to continue making a positive impact in our community.
